The Selkirk 863 by Buck Knives is an extremely practical knife. It has Micarta handles, an average but serviceable 420HC steel blade, and an inserted nylon sheath that can be worn either vertically or horizontally.
In case you become stranded without shelter and need to start a fire or call for assistance, the sheath can also be used to hold a ferro rod with an incorporated whistle.

Although the handle doesn’t seem like much, I found it to be comfortable and to have good handling qualities. Like most Buck knives, the blade is also of a slightly uninteresting yet functional design.
And you want a bushcrafting knife to have that.
You will survive by dull utility. The Buck Knife Selkirk won’t rip out your wallet if you lose it in the woods, and it costs half as much as the ESEE-4P.

The sheath is first-rate. The sheath encloses the knife’s guard and blade and snaps into place with a visible lock. I’m sure I could fall down a mountain and into a river without losing the knife. The sheath is constructed from a robust nylon that resembles kydex. Its interior is lined with mounting holes, which is quite useful for repositioning the base and belt loop.
Even better, the belt loop has a useful separator that you can use to adjust the size so that it fits three different belt widths. The belt loop can also be moved so that it is on either side for carrying on the right or left, horizontal for carrying in the small of your back, or on the side.
There is no need for additional tools because the provided screws can be removed with the back tip of the knife.
The fire-starter/whistle combo is likewise housed in a holder on the sheath. The fire-starter is of the highest quality, longer than others, and fits snugly inside the knife’s choil. You can direct the spark exactly where you want it to go by manipulating the choil, and you won’t damage the knife blade’s finish either.
The best of both worlds are so present. Although you probably won’t use the whistle very often, it isn’t a burden to have it. It is loud. Overall, excellent execution.
